Sound Advice for Avoiding Nail Fungus

Most of us don’t think much about our feet until there is a problem. Nail fungus is a contagious, fungal infection that can affect fingernails and toenails. It can be painful and embarrassing, and is often resistant to treatment.

The good news is you can prevent fungal infections from occurring in the first place. How? With good hygiene and common sense. Fungus love moist conditions. Eliminate that moisture and they have less chance to survive and thrive.

– If you already have an infected fingernail, be sure to wash your hands frequently to prevent the fungus from spreading to other nails.

– Dry skin and nails are less likely to become infected. Keep your hands and feet dry as much as possible, wearing rubber gloves when using water, and dry socks on your feet (change them during the day if necessary).

– Dry your feet after bathing, even between the toes!

– Wear sandals or shoes made from material that allows moisture to escape, and alternate between closed and open-toe shoes if you can. Spraying antifungal products in shoes can help keep those fungi at bay.

– Make sure those shoes fit right too – tight shoes can cause injury to the tips of toenails, which can easily lead to a fungal infection.

– Never go barefoot in public pools or spaces. Wear flip-flops or shower sandals, and be sure to let them dry thoroughly between uses.

– Don’t share socks, shoes, clippers, or nail files.

– Keep your nails clean and short – but not too short! Cutting nails back too far is a frequent cause of nail injury, which can lead to infection. Trim them straight across and use a file for other areas.

– On that note, try not to pick at or trim the skin around your nails. This area is ripe for germs to gather and get access into your nails.

– If you want to get artificial nails, or have a manicure or pedicure, ensure the salon is reputable and uses sterile instruments.

– Better yet, forgo the products altogether. Polish can trap moisture, making nails more prone to infection.
